Actors do more than just show up on set, and it’s clear Tom Schanley leads quite the busy Life at Work. Between working in television, on shows like Criminal Minds, Dexter and the CSI’s and writing his own films, Tom’s got his hands full. He’s pretty lucky though, read on to see why…

Describe your typical workday

When not on set, I’m up around 8 AM.  I write (hopefully without procrastination) for a couple hours.  Gym.  Make sure my agents and managers remember whom the hell I am.  Then just go where the day takes me.  When on set, it depends on the gig.  I may have a 6 AM call, or any other time during the day.  Then, I just go where they tell me.

If you could work anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Fortunately the nature of the film business allows you to work everywhere.  I’ve worked from Rome to Shanghai and loved ‘em all.  But if I had  to pick one place to “base” out of?   It would be right where I am.  Santa Monica California, 3 blocks from the sand!  Can ya’ blame me?

How would you describe your workspace?

My whole living room…. and some of the kitchen.  (I’ve gotta’ eat, right?)

What is one “work item” you can’t live without (could be your planner, laptop, iphone, ipad, etc)?

My monkey…… No, the computer……… But the monkey’s important.

If you could switch careers for a day, what would you do?

I wouldn’t mind checking out Richard Branson’s world…. I might not give it back though.

You have so much going on; can you give us one tip on how you keep it all together?

My publicist…..(slave driver).

What are 3 things fans don’t know about you?

I’m a Saints fan.

I love Shakespeare.

My yodeling skills have been greatly exaggerated.

Actor Tom Schanley is known mostly for his work in television, on shows like Criminal Minds, Dexter and the CSI’s, but he has also had the privilege of working with some of the cinematic icons of our time:  Academy Award winning director Ed Zwick and Denzel Washington in Courage Under Fire, Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts in Conspiracy Theory among others.   Along with his writing partner Jon Lindstrom, Tom wrote and executive produced the feature film THE HARD EASY, starring David Boreanaz, Bruce Dern and Vera Farmiga.   Watch for Tom in the upcoming NBC series, Outlaw, with Jimmy Smits.

Even though none of us here at TheOfficeStylist play golf, we’d still enjoy a mug like this one. Imagine conference calls, sales calls and calls with your mother in law while you play around with this thing. Tired of wasting paper, I decided to try one of our new items in our store, the Ceramic Memo Board.

Measures 8.5 x 6.5 x 2.5, comes with one dry erase marker that fits perfectly at the top of the memo board.

This has to be one of my new favorite and necessary desk items. Yes I still use sticky notes, but only when I need to book mark things or write on a specific document. However the Ceramic Memo Board is where I jot down everything that needs to be done for the day. It comes with a dry erase marker and anything you write is super easy to wipe off. I could use a tissue or towel but when I’m in a rush I just wipe off a to-do with my finger and voila! More room for more to-dos.

It’s bigger than most to-d0 pads, very comfortable to use, and you never feel like you’re really running out of space.

The Office Stylist

I’d have to say this is by far the most colorful office I’ve ever profiled. EVERY floor has a different color. It got me thinking, what am I doing here? Why don’t I work for Hyves, a company based in the Netherlands? You’ll feel the same way I do after taking a look at all the photos. It really makes you wonder why more American based companies aren’t putting effort into their offices. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot better than it was 5 years ago, ten years ago and so on. However, I have yet to see an office like this:

Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?

The website of Hyves is very colorful, with orange and blue. And Hyves is a very fresh young Company, therefore we chose fresh colors.

What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.

The prints and the wall used in the traffic areas.  The cantina, it is an organized chaos!

Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?

Yes it makes our work much nicer; we get very happy from all the colors here.

Tell us about Hyves and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.

We finally fit in the building as we were growing so fast. Every floor has his own color, Its recognizable. We love it!
