What made you decide to start bringing Meatball into work?

Meatball goes everywhere we go! He is very well behaved (most of the time) and everyone loves him and misses him when he isn’t here, so he has definitely become a big part of our office culture.

How would you describe a typical workday with  Meatball?

Jumping from lap to lap to make his daily rounds and make sure everyone in the office gets their Meatball time

Would you say that having your pet at work helps or hinders your work?

It definitely can hinder work, as he can be a little distracting with his cuteness, but overall it makes me happier to have him with me all day, therefore I believe I work better and harder when I’m not being distracted!
What do clients think/say about Meatball being at the office with you?

Our clients love Meatball! I think they think it’s fun that we have him here, and they love to play with him when they come in. We’re a Creative company so we can get away with more unconventional business practices!
Do you think more offices should allow pets at work?

It definitely depends on the environment and how safe it is to have an animal there, but in general I think it’s a great way to build company culture and create a fun work environment

What’s your favorite thing about having Meatball at work?

I have more separation anxiety than he does when it comes to being away from him for long periods, so for me it makes me feel better to have my furbaby close to me for the majority of my day, rather than keeping him cooped up at home by himself.

About you
What made you decide to start bringing Sitka into work? I needed to bring him because we had to go somewhere directly after work, so I asked my boss if I could bring him. Everyone loved him, and he really enjoyed himself. I thought he was good for morale, so I started bringing him more often.

How would you describe a typical workday with Sitka ? We start everyday with a cup of coffee and a bowl of water. We have a two level office. We enter on the lower level, but the customers enter on the upper level. This is where our Client Services Coordinator, Carol works. Her office has three walls of glass that look out to the busy, city street. After Sitka drinks his morning bowl, he always runs upstairs to see Carol. He sits up there with her by the window for the first few hours. This is when he greets customers, makes playful gestures to passing dogs and makes sure Carol is getting her work done.

I work downstairs. Around lunchtime, Sitka comes downstairs. Not surprising, this is where our kitchen is located. He spends lunch watching us all eat, hoping for a handout (which he always seems to con out of one of us). Then it’s back to work, which Sitka normally supervises from the couch. Sometime after that, it’s time for his walk around Old Town. Normally we bring a deposit to the bank and drop off the mail.

The rest of the day is spent with Sitka lying in the middle of the floors downstairs. The floor is cold, and Sitka thinks we work too hard.

Would you say that having your pet at work helps or hinders your work? We’re a dog training company so having a well-trained dog in the office is very helpful. He also loves strangers and/or customers, which doesn’t hurt at all. Of course, he’s a big boy so sometimes he literally gets in the way. We have all wheeled over him in our office chairs and taken a large chunk of his hair with us. He also takes up a large portion of the couch when we’re trying to take a break. That is incredibly UNhelpful.

What do clients think/say about Sitka being at the office with you? They have always seemed entertained and happy to see him. Because we’re a dog training company we only have dog lovers walking in. Clients always comment on his large size, friendliness and unusual coloring.

Do you think more offices should allow pets at work? Absolutely. Dogs can really support a team. It’s nice to have a mascot and someone to sit with you will you look at a computer all day. You have to be careful about what dogs are allowed in the work place though. Sitka is relaxed and loves new people and places. It’s important that your dog possess a positive association with the office, otherwise they will act inappropriately, which doesn’t help the workplace.

What’s your favorite thing about having Sitka at work? He keeps my feet warm when he lays under my desk.

• Writing for our dog training blog, our syndicated dog training and behavior advice column, and for his own advice column – a Pooch’s Perspective.
• Social media updates on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Project co-manager.
• Assisting as demo dog in classes and workshops, as well as with online coaching.
• Volunteers as my subject when training new behaviors.
• Answering emails.
• End of year inventory
• Time schedule manager – lets us know when it’s time for a break and for lunch.
• Alerts when mail or packages have arrived.
• Lap warming when humans are cold.
• Pet therapy when employees are feeling stressed.
• Dog product testing

What made you decide to start bringing Poncho into work?

He is actually the one who inspired me to become a dog trainer and behavior consultant.

 How would you describe a typical workday with  Poncho?

We start with going over the agenda while on a walk or playing game of fetch. Work on various dog training and behavior advice columns, return emails/phone calls. He’ll accompany me to a class or workshop if needed, otherwise he’ll stay at the office and work until I’m back. Or, he’ll accompany my husband to his medical office where he provides companionship to employees and patients. We also spend time practicing training exercises. When he asks for a nap or break, I allow him to have them, even though I don’t. Need to keep the staff happy.

 Would you say that having your pet at work helps or hinders your work?

Oh it totally helps having him at work with me. He’s an inquisitive canine that knows a lot about human behavior, so it’s nice to have his input when writing our columns. Plus, he’s a great co-working. Never complains.

What do clients think/say about Poncho being at the office with you?

They think it’s great – always happy to see him in the office and while helping me in classes.

Do you think more offices should allow pets at work?

Definitely YES! Similar to music, food and dance, pets really bring communities together. You’ll find that so many people are bonded by the shared love of their pets. As long as it’s safe for both the humans and non-human animals, I say businesses should consider it.

What’s your favorite thing about having Poncho at work?

He’s not only my co-working but my BFFF – that’s best fido friend forever. I miss him when he’s not with me. Even those days when he’s working double-time with the barking task.
