I’d have to say this is by far the most colorful office I’ve ever profiled. EVERY floor has a different color. It got me thinking, what am I doing here? Why don’t I work for Hyves, a company based in the Netherlands? You’ll feel the same way I do after taking a look at all the photos. It really makes you wonder why more American based companies aren’t putting effort into their offices. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot better than it was 5 years ago, ten years ago and so on. However, I have yet to see an office like this:

I’m just going to come right out and say it: this is by far the most stylish and well designed doctors offices I have ever seen. Think about it, what does your doctor’s office look like? Chances are it hasn’t been re-designed or decorated since the 80′s and has a funky smell. But when you’re a TV star and plastic surgeon , the importance of a well designed space takes priority. As you’ll see, Dr. Ordon prides himself on making things beautiful both in the operating room and through out his office as well.

Interview with Sayeh Editor/Founder of TheOfficeStylist and Dr. Ordon

Describe your office space to us

My office is at the RoxSan building, a landmark building in Beverly Hills. It was once a mecca for plastic surgery and has enjoyed a new renaissance in the last decade or so. It has become the premier location in Beverly Hills for plastic surgery. There are several accredited surgery centers in the building and the quality of our facilities are second to none. We have Two sides to the office: one is a surgery center and the other is a doctors office and medical spa. They work together perfectly to provide my associates and I with everything we need. “We have created a spa like atmosphere, like a boutique hotel catering to quality, not quantity.”

Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?

As my friend Dr. Phil likes to say, “This isn’t my first rodeo”. I have designed and built my own office surgery centers for 25 years and I have learned a thing or two. I have to admit, the facility at Roxbury is my finest effort. That is so because I have help nowadays. Several associates in similar specialties have enhanced it greatly with their own input and specialization.

What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.

Well, I love the entry, the spectacular views of the Hollywood Hills and Bel Air, but to a surgeon my favorite part is the one part only a few patients get to see. The operating room. It is gorgeous! Just about every surgeon that sees it for the first time unconsciously nod their heads “yes” as they look around and take it all in. My favorite aspect of the operating room is something you wouldn’t necessarily expect. Windows! I am very connected to nature and the outdoors and there is something peaceful and serene about natural light. I could be in that room all day long, and sometimes I am!

Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?

I am sure the user-friendliness of our office helps greatly. And we do have a great crew. I am not sure why that is, but during my career I have been very blessed with talented associates and employees. We all love what we do and it shows in our attitudes and actions. Most of our patients are “repeaters”. They were happy with the relationships formed at the office and are ready to do the next thing with us, when the time is right.

Tell us about what you do and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.

As a surgeon, I am naturally into things that “work”. Functionality. As a Plastic Surgeon I also appreciate aesthetics and aspire to create art and beauty. My office is a collaborative testimony to that. It absolutely works, and it is certainly a pleasant place to work and care for my patients. My office is an expression of what I, myself aspire to be as a plastic surgeon.

Dr. Andrew Ordon is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with practices in both Beverly Hills and Rancho Mirage, California. He is also one of the Co-Stars of the hit Emmy winning television shows, “The Doctors”. He is one of the founders of Surgical Friends Foundation, a non-profit offering complimentary reconstructive surgery for those children and adults both domestic and abroad who otherwise would not be able to afford such services. He is the father of two recent college graduates who are following in his footsteps as they prepare to enter medical school. Dr. Ordon lives with his wife, Robyn, an interior designer.

Interview with Sayeh Editor/Founder of TheOfficeStylist and Project Designer Erin Hofer-Shall of TRO Jung Brannen

Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?

The space was inspired, in part, by the clarity and simplicity of the modern architecture of Mies van der Rohe. We are an Architecture, Engineering and Design Firm and we wanted to create a space that would foster continuous collaboration. The expansive use of white with just a few accent colors was meant to provide an ample canvas for the creative minds working in our office. Most importantly we wanted to design a space that would be sustainable and represent our firm’s commitment to Green Design.

What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.

My favorite design element of the space is the Link that we created to connect the two buildings that our firm occupies. We had the challenge of finding a building in Boston that would provide a large enough footprint to house our entire firm on one floor. We felt that if we forced vertical circulation, with floors stacked one of top of another, we would inhibit collaboration. As a solution we found two buildings that sat only a foot apart from one another with two floors that were askew by a mere eleven foot drop, and we built a glass Link that connected the two. We can now flow between the buildings with ease.

Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?

Our new office space has brought a sense of pride and energy to the way we all work. As designers it is a treat to come to work every day in a space that you are proud to show clients. Because of our commitment to creating a sustainable space we were awarded LEED Silver distinction that has given us all the motivation to bring sustainable design into everything we create. In addition, the new space is full of team rooms, break rooms, multi-purposes spaces and a top notch library. All the resources that you need to create are right at your finger tips.

Tell us about TRO Jung Brannen and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.

The impetus behind the new office space was the merger of the two firms The Ritchie Organization and Jung Brannen. One of the primary goals behind the design of the new space was to create a Headquarters that would foster collaboration between the two firms to create the new TRO Jung Brannen. We created a team of Interior Designers and Engineers from both firms to design the new space. This process and it’s outcome helped us to unify and become a very solid firm.

This NYC office is just how I imagine one to be; exposed brick, cement floors, and tall airy ceilings. I probably don’t even need to mention that I love the exposed brick, but I’ll do so anyway. Some of you probably already recognize the Ikea furniture, but it wasn’t just a trip to Ikea that brought this space together. The folks over at SheFinds Media actually worked with Ikea Designers to mold this loft into a modern, chic workspace.

As interviewed by Sayeh, The Office Stylist with Michelle Madhok CEO of SheFinds Media

Describe your office space to us

Our office is an airy loft, with tons of windows and a glass-walled conference room. When we got the space, it was actually several very small rooms, with some of the windows boarded over and the charming red brick painted over in a dingy white. We exposed the brick and the extra windows, knocked down the walls, and gave the whole space a much more modern, downtown feel.

Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?

IKEA was a wonderful partner in helping us renovate the space. We worked with their designers to make sure the space was functional and attractive – classic IKEA style. The walls and floors also take inspiration from IKEA’s pared-down aesthetic: We have cement-and-wood floors, and an exposed-brick wall adjacent to a full wall of windows.

What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.

I love the wood half of the floor and the exposed brick wall. They’re nods to my more classic style, while the taste of my husband, who is our COO, is reflected in the cement wall half of the floor and the sleek, minimalist furniture.

Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?

Having a space of our own is a huge productivity boon; when we shared office space in a different building, employees couldn’t leave anything at work, and we had conflicts about which of the tenants was using the conference room. It’s much more comfortable for us to bring potential partners into this space than it was the last one – the design reflects the SHEfinds brand, and sets the right tone for conversations about who we are as a company.

Tell us about SheFinds Media and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.

We create websites that help stylish, time-pressed women shop online. Having a space that reflects our brand aesthetic and taste level is hugely important for partner meetings, and even for the tone of the workspace in general. Our websites are all about organizing your shopping experience and saving time online; an organized, unified, highly functioning space keeps our heads in the right place to create organized, unified, highly-functioning content.

Interview by Sayeh Pezeshki, Editor/Founder of TheOfficeStylist with (add)ventures President + Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosa

Describe your office space to us.

(add)ventures headquarters was conceived as a client partner escape place where our team can think, work and play. Every detail of our headquarters, designed by the staff of (add)ventures, was created to help our client partners and employees generate their best ideas, formulate their best strategies, produce their best work and enjoy every second doing it.

Original elements of our building’s architecture – such as wood-paneled ceilings, vintage glass blocks and exposed brick — were incorporated into the new design. The old vault, once impermeable storage for raw gold, is now the space for our (add)motion edit bays – where the loud music tracks and voiceovers can be played without interrupting the rest of the space.

Natural light was a key requirement in the design – so keeping large windows, adding skylights and installing transom glass at least 7 feet up on the wall enabled light to flow into interior spaces. Exposed ductwork and pipes create openness.

The walls are painted with vibrant tones of gold and blue to incorporate the (add) ventures brand, and are accented with “fusion green” to spark creativity.

Among our featured space is the Collaboratory®, a proprietary ideation and hospitality function space; the Causeway, our social impact gallery; Cinco Bistro, a multicultural taste test kitchen; and Onset Blues, our on-site studio with a cyclorama, which gives the “infinity” look in video productions.

My office, dubbed the “board room” because of its surfboard coffee table, is a comfy chairs and couch-filled room with no traditional desk. I like to be mobile to best collaborate with team members throughout our office space.

And with all the hard work we do at (add)ventures, we require that the space encourage “play” — on our rooftop deck named “South Beach” (an homage to our Florida office), and in the “Olympic” gym, where the Wii Fit is housed and group fitness sessions take place.

What makes (add)ventures’ space cool is not just what you see, but the energy you feel. While its interior design and physical layout are impressive, its true magic lies in the power of great people coming together to achieve great things. The space is often home to community group meetings, professional association board meetings and as an oasis for those seeking a place where they can think creatively.

Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?

Our new headquarters, opened in July 2008, is located in a renovated jewelry manufacturing plant in the emerging Harborside District of Providence, and the design of the space was inspired by some of the building’s original architectural elements, as well as our growing company’s need for an environment that brought together our creative and strategic services.

The driving concept for our new headquarters was to create a “work, think and play” sanctuary for staff, client partners and the community. The workspace needed to function so that creative and strategic professionals could be in a relaxing and productive environment. The space also has flexible rooms for large strategic planning sessions with our client partners. These rooms, decorated and named in honor of (add) ventures legendary parties, like “Mardi Gras” and “Spring Break,” have whiteboards, plasma TVs and wireless access to the internet.

What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why?

I especially love our rooftop deck that we call South Beach in an homage to our Miami hub. The deck brings nature and a little vacation fantasy into the workplace. There is a view of our great city that no one else in Providence enjoys. The only other high vantage points on our side of the city are from hospital rooms where people are too sick or stressed to fully enjoy the amazing skyline at sunset. I see a lot of productive ideas generated and laughs shared on the the South Beach rooftop deck. This may sound cheesy, but when I see employees out on the deck, I honestly feel like a proud father watching kids having fun and building confidence in the back yard.

Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?

Yes. As cool as it looks and as much as we enjoy our HQ, the design has improved our daily processes and efficiency 100 fold. We designed our space the way we design solutions for clients – with a purpose. It’s not cool for coolness sake. The true sexiness of our designs, whether it is an environment we create or a campaign we launch, is not just how it looks but what it empowers you to do. Our HQ helps us live the (add)ventures brand, mission and values. It helps us solve problems and make people happy.

In our old space, our creative and strategy teams were in separate wings due to the limitations of the layout. Here, we gutted everything and built a walkway/gallery to attach a second building that would unify our teams as well as integrate our think, work and play spaces. We call it the causeway and it is a daily reminder that our firm exists to do much more than make money. It is a social impact gallery of the vital work our clients do around the world and how we help. It also spotlights the (add)ventures social impact program, (add)love, where our firm donates and employees volunteer to help causes our clients and community believe in.

I love our convergence spaces that bring our strategic and creative teams together and inspire genius solutions to client problems. Our collaboratory wing allows our client partners to bring their entire department to ideate alongside our multidisciplinary teams in a creative sanctuary where they become truly open to innovation possibilities. We facilitate proprietary SOLVEsessions there that help people envision the future and “solve to evolve.

Tell us about (add)ventures and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.

(add)ventures is a multidisciplinary communications firm headquartered in Providence, R.I. with offices in Miami, New York City and Estonia. (add)ventures combines strategic intelligence and creative genius to inform, inspire, recruit and retain brand stakeholders. The company works with Fortune 500 companies, industry and innovation leaders, leading universities, major non-profits, and governments to create unique, multidisciplinary brand communications. The (add) in (add)ventures represents the aligned dynamic disciplines of brand stakeholder communications – marketing, branding, public relations, advertising, and corporate, cause and employee communications – all services that (add)ventures integrates to build brands and brand loyalty.

(add)ventures HQ feels like a family home. That is what we wanted for our employees every day – to feel appreciated and valued. We offer a welcoming workplace that they are proud to share with our client partners which helps them think bigger and produce work they are proud of. We added play space where we can celebrate our victories which is important in a deadline-driven business where the greatest reward is more challenging work and often tighter deadlines. Think, work and play space – the (add)ventures HQ has all that and more. Great people coming together in a sanctuary to think bigger, act bolder and make life better.

Something I always notice when profiling an office, is that people usually bring in elements they have in their home into their office space. When I asked Jessica Kernochan of LaLicious about the space, she mentioned that her home has a lot of glass, natural light and high ceilings. Not a surprise that when working with their architect, they brought those very same elements into the LaLicious office space.

I was really excited to head on down to the LaLicious offices. One reason if you didn’t already know, LaLicious makes the most amazing body scrubs and oils with the most scrumptious smelling flavors on the planet. Okay back to their offices…

It’s clear that when you hire an architect, it’s going to make the world of a difference in an office space. Kudos to the archietect behind this space with all the open space, natural light and glass panels, we just may want to move in. Though Jessica and I found that the lobby/entrance to be our favorite parts of the space, it’s tough to just say I like one thing in particular.

However, if I could pick one thing to bring into every office/work space that I see, it would be natural light. It’s a world of a difference between florescent lighting with minimal windows and bright, open airy spaces like LaLicious.

About LaLicious:

LaLicious Sugar Soufflé Scrubs maintain their form from creation to application using natural ingredients and a special whipped technique. Coconut and almond oil provide minerals, vitamins and proteins that are essential for beautiful skin. The oils also penetrate skin easily while locking in moisture without leaving a greasy feeling. Almond oil in particular, relieves itching, dryness, inflammation, burns and thread veins. Vitamin E oil soothes and conditions as the honey helps soften. Last but not least, Pure Cane Sugar is a less abrasive exfoliant than salt- it won’t sting cuts on the skin. With the perfect combination of ingredients LaLicious helps exfoliate, condition, moisturize and smooth you to perfection! LaLicious paraben free skincare products are everything your body craves and deserves!
