HOK Atlanta
HOK’s Atlanta offices fall right in line with what The Office Stylist© is based on, living well at work©. Not only is their workplace spacious, well designed and infused with tons of natural light, but HOK’s Atlanta office has space to just relax too. If you’re spending more time working than you do sleeping, employers have the right idea when making their offices more comfortable for employees. As you’ll see in the interview below, they noticed a significant change in the way their employees felt about coming into work, after they did a re-design.

Interview by Sayeh, The Office Stylist with John Cantrell, sustainable design manager, HOK
Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?
I would say our inspiration came from the organization of space needs. We have several space types including pinup critique walls, lounge areas, project galleries, and layout surfaces that all in the end drove the circulation ‘straight-forward’ nature of the space as a whole. Maybe ‘functional simplicity’ could be considered an inspiration.
What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.
Definitely my favorite part is that all of our workstations are configured in such a way that every person has a seated view to the outdoors from the 41st floor. That in itself is pretty awesome. Not only is it just great to see outside all the time, but the quality of the daylight is amazing. We get tons of natural daylight.
Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?
Absolutely. Before we moved into our this office it was apparent that everyone would practically bolt for the door at 5 p.m. . Now it seems that everyone stays much later because of how relaxing the space can be to work in.
Tell us about HOK Atlanta and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.
I think the key to enjoying a ‘well-designed’ space means that you create a culture in which that space can adapt and change over time. Things are never ‘perfect’ but we’ve learned to use it in various ways over time, and then we adapt it to meet those needs. It’s a lot like your own house. No matter how good the renovation, you’ll never be fully satisfied with perfection.
