Life at Work with Dr. Ordon of the Emmy winning show, The Doctors
It’s not every day I get to interview a TV start and plastic surgeon. Dr. Ordon gets to wear two hats in his life at work, and he is lucky enough that he loves both of them. What’s his favorite work item and what’s a typical work day like for him? Read on to find out…
Describe your typical workday
Well, I wear two hats. I need to be “on” for television, with high energy and a clear message. Other days, as a practicing surgeon, my operating days are relatively peaceful and sublime. But with it’s own unique kind of pressure. So I have to have a very different attitude and mindset depending upon if I am on TV or not. Then occasionally, to make things even more confusing, I invite The Doctors’ cameras into my operating room to film a surgery of interest. I guess that is my favorite work day, because it combines the energy of television with the tremendous comfort I feel in surgery.
If you could work anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I have operated in makeshift operating tents in Haiti and deluxe operating suites in Beverly Hills. Although the relief work is very rewarding, I have to admit that being in my own operating room in LA, surrounded by the best equipment and personnel has it’s advantages.
How would you describe your workspace?
I am an orderly person. I like to know exactly where everything I need is in a flash. In surgery, speed and efficiency saves lives. My office, medical spa and surgery reflects those needs. I designed them, built them and supervise them. I have to admit, I get a lot of compliments on out space from both patients and doctors alike.
Your favorite thing about your workspace.
I like the clean, modern and steam lined design and appearance of our office, medical spa and surgery center. Everything has a purpose, from the well located and maintained computer terminals to the instruments in the drawer to the laser standing at the ready in the corner. We can handle just about any patient with any problem in the plastic surgery field. From cancer reconstruction to laser hair removal. We are prepared always!
What is one “work item” you can’t live without (could be your planner, laptop, iphone, ipad, etc)?
I just love my favorite face-lift scissor. I can do anything with it. I use it for surgery on the face, breast, tummy, you name it. It is make by the best surgical instrument company in the world and is a thing of beauty. I knew, the first time I held one of these in my hand that, as a plastic surgeon, I had arrived.
If you could switch careers for a day, what would you do?
I’d love to feel the thrill of professional athletic competition. I enjoy sports, especially golf and tennis. But to compete for all the marbles before a large crowd cheering and jeering is one experience only a gifted few enjoy. It wold be fun to see what that is like just once. Hey, there is always the senior tour!
What tip or advice would you give someone trying to do what you do?
You have to love what you do. You can plan, arrange things ahead of time all you want but when you are in the moment, you have to embrace it. Own it. Don’t let expectations prevent you from living in the right-now.
