Life at Work with Fashion Stylist, Lauren Messiah

Describe your typical workday

The great thing about my job is that nothing is typical. I work as a wardrobe stylist and I also run School Of Style (a school for aspiring wardrobe stylists) with founder, Luke Storey. So basically I have the best of both worlds … the business savvy end of helping to run a new business and the creative end with my styling jobs.

On a styling job, my typical day includes shopping, managing a team of interns, dressing clients, and basically running around like a chicken with my head cut off ;) Working on the school is a bit more chill but has its own set of stresses (running a business is no walk in the park). Days like those include a lot of business meetings, working in the office, and brainstorming new ideas.

If you could work anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Hawaii. I’ve never even been to Hawaii but it seems like an amazing place to be. Living a life of relaxation in beautiful weather would be on another level. However, I really enjoy living and working in LA. Its pretty incredible actually. There are so many different places to go, its chill, and the weather is awesome.

How would you describe your workspace?

I work out of my home most of the time, so thats great! When I’m not at the home office, I’m either on set of a styling job or out shopping somewhere (Barney’s is my favorite). My home office is awesome though! I have a great vintage tanker desk with my brand new Mac, a giant cork board with inspiration photos, clothing racks galore, hangers, steamers and other stylist BS, and a ton of clothes!!! Its kind of hard not to love your office with its filled with great clothes.

Your favorite thing about your workspace

My favorite part is probably the lighting, I have a great vintage chandelier that I love. I also love that I have space!!! In my previous home I had a desk crammed into my tiny bedroom. Now I have a nice large space that can suit all of my working needs.

What is one “work item” you can’t live without (could be your planner, laptop, iphone, ipad, etc)?

Oh boy, only one!! Yikes … Well when I am off working on a styling job I absolutely cannot live without my iPhone. As a stylist you have to be available at all times. From calling showrooms, to emailing clients, and of course the ability to be online while you are on set is an added bonus. BUT if I am working in the office on School Of Style, my MacBook is a must. Pretty hard to function these days without an awesome computer.

If you could switch careers for a day, what would you do?

Switch careers? Never! I just switched from an office job to my total dream job so I wouldn’t change it for anything. Seriously, I can’t think of one other job that could even compete with mine.

What tip or advice would you give someone trying to do what you do?

For anyone who wants to get into styling I would first say, come to our school ;) I know, shameless plug but thats where I got my start before I started running the school with Luke. Another bit of advice is to do anything you can to get your foot in the door. Intern, assist, work in the fashion industry in any capacity … do ANYTHING! You may have to work for free for a few years but the hard work and determination will pay off in the end.
