Lisa Congdon’s Vintage Studio Space

A vintage studio space that not only inspires and motivates Lisa of LisaCongdon.com, but is essential to creating her artwork and designs. Her home away from home is an eclectic mix of vintage pieces, bright colors, and beautiful artwork.

TOS: Where did the inspiration for your office/studio space design come from?

Lisa: I am an avid collector of old things, from vintage ephemera to vintage office and school supplies, the list goes on. I like to mix my collections with my artwork in my studio environment. My work and collections are very colorful, and I love how the color pops out off of the white walls.

TOS: What is your favorite part/design of your office/studio space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.

Lisa: I love the light. I live in a really dark apartment with very little natural light, so coming to my studio is a real treat. There are skylights along the entire north half of the ceiling (which is very high and somewhat arched) and so rain or shine we (I have a studio mate) get this really bright, diffuse light which is wonderful to be and work in.

TOS: Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office/studio has helped with your creativity and work?

Lisa: Definitely. I think that’s why I keep so many personal items around and why I’ve taken such care to put up shelving to hold things that inspire me. If it was just a place to make work and only had paint and a work table in it, I’d be bored.

TOS: Can you give us one design tip that we can use at home or at the office?

Lisa: Move things around periodically so that your environment changes from time to time. This helps me stay inspired and keep a fresh perspective on my work.

TOS: Tell us about www.lisacongdon.com and what it means to you to have an office/studio space that you love.

Lisa: I am a illustrator and a fine artist, which means I make work that is used for commercial purposes (stationery, children’s books, editorial gigs, fabric design, etc), and I also make work that is intended for gallery shows and for people to purchase for decoration. I spend a lot of time in my studio each week making things with paint and pens and pencils at my work table (about four to five days) and so being in an environment that is peaceful and visually appealing to me is really important. In some ways, I think of my studio as my home away from home, or my oasis.
