A lot of people will tell you that black doesn’t really count as a color.

I, most certainly disagree.

Though I do despise black plastic or mesh pencil holders and other kinds of mundane looking office supplies, I do know that there is a way style your office black(and have it look good too!).

Adding black into your space should be done with utmost care. It’s not the color black that can make your space look boring, it’s the way you use it and what products you use.

You can’t add stylish pieces to the room if you are going to let the mess take over. After your done with this step, reward yourself with some pretty pieces like this Iris Pencil Cup:

Let’s get started shall we?

Got a pile of receipts just sitting on your desk in different corners? Toss them out!

Gum wrappers, movie ticket stubs, expired  lunch coupons? You know where they belong-in the trash.

Now let’s move on to the piles of paper you have divided. You should divide your papers into Keep, Toss, and Maybe piles to make this process as efficient as possible. Once you have thrown away or shredded the papers in your toss pile, you can attack your maybe pile.

Are you starting to notice the difference? Your space should already feel lighter, cleaner, and more inviting. In order to be as efficient as possible at work, you need to make it the environment you want to be it for the 8-10 hours a day you work.

A Twitter friend of mine recently asked if there was anything he could add to his office to make it less….well…boring.  Women aren’t the only ones tired of seeing black plastic pencil holders, and boring black leather desk accessories. Without asking for Office Style(because that wouldn’t be manly ) he asked that I see what he could do to make his office a bit more fun.

See when you want to bring Office Style to any space you have to first Divide + Release, then Color  + Conquer, and lastly Touch + Transform.

So here we go:

1. I noticed my friend had a very clean and organized space, so that knocks out Divide + Release

2. He decided he would like to have Gray + Green as the colors for his space so let’s put a check mark next to Color + Conquer

3. Let’s go over 3 right now…

The first thing I would do to bring in a spot of gray is add the Charcoal Writing Mat. It’s really handy and it adds the spot of gray that we need.

Next I am assuming he wants to kick the plastic pencil cup holder to the curb so here we have The Butt Station-Desk Organizer. Don’t laugh! This fun + colorful guy has a lot to offer. Lift him off the toilet and keep your paperclips in the bowl, post its/pencils are kept in the back of the “toilet,” as well as in his mouth and lastly we have toilet paper tape in his hands.

Now to add things that we know he will need as any office normally does, but in the colors he is looking for:

Who said that guys can’t add a bit of style + function into their office?

You’ve heard me say it time and time again that you can’t bring in Office Style if your desk is a mess. Well, i guess you can but you just wouldn’t be able to notice anything cute on your desk since it will most likely be buried under all your stuff.

How are you going to notice your adorable Blue Petite Calculator?

Or how about your poor Chocolate Letter Trays that are completely covered in overflowing file folders? 

I have a simple step that is part of my Office Styling techniques I use everyday and it’s the first of a step I call Divide & Release.

Step 1. Divide

You most likely have piles of papers or perhaps just stacks of file folders and legal pad notes  scattered across your desk right? Don’t be shy…you are not alone! Let’s make this easy for you and just put all your file folders in one pile, and your loose papers in another pile. You can put your post its, note pads, and legal pads in another pile. Now, put everything back where it belongs, i.e. your stapler, paperclip box, letter tray and anything else that was misplaced with the desk mess!

Do you see the difference?

Just by moving things and dividing them into sections on your desk, you can clear a lot of space. Granted you haven’t gone through every pile to organize them, but you are one HUGE step forward in bringing office style into your manila world!
